China Pet Food Industry Development Report: Cat Food Becomes the Dominant Category in the Pet E-commerce Market

Beijing, Oct. 28 (Gao Lei, reporter of China Youth Network) - On October 28, the "China (Nanhe) Pet Food Series Index", jointly launched by the Economic Information Center of China and the Nanhe District People's Government of Xingtai City, was officially released in Beijing. The "China Pet Food Industry Development Index Report (2025)" was also unveiled. The report, which revolves around three dimensions: industry environment, industry strength, and industry potential, interprets the full picture of the pet food industry development, providing decision-making references for governments, enterprises, and investors. Experts present believe that driven by the emotional economy and technological innovation, China's pet food industry is moving towards a new stage of efficient and sustainable development.

  Yang Mei, member of the Party Committee and Vice President of China Economic Information Network, pointed out that with the changes in social structure and the upgrading of emotional consumption, pets have transformed from "life companions" to "family members", driving the pet industry into a high-quality development stage with quality upgrading, innovation-driven and social responsibility as the core. CNI will take the opportunity of the release of this index to help the pet industry in Nanhe and the national pet economy to improve quality and efficiency through data empowerment, credit construction and dissemination.

  Zhao Xuefeng, a second-level inspection official in Xingtai City, introduced that the pet industry in Nanhe has undergone a transformation from traditional feed processing to the entire industry chain after 30 years of development. At present, there are more than 938 pet-related market entities in the local area, driving more than 33,000 people to be employed, and the industrial cluster revenue has exceeded 18.9 billion yuan. The production and sales of pet food account for about 60% of the country, and four of the top ten pet food production enterprises in the country are located in Nanhe. At the same time, it is also the national cat litter production base, forming a reputation of "the world's pets look at China, and China's pets look at Nanhe".

  The Party Secretary and District Chief of Nanhe District, Xingtai City, Zhang Shoufeng, mentioned in the industry promotion that from January to September 2025, the revenue of the pet food industry cluster in Nanhe District reached 14.75 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 8.6%. In the future, Nanhe will focus on "technology support, innovation development, and shared manufacturing" to promote the industry towards brand, intelligence, clustering, and internationalization.

  After the release ceremony, Yang Fuki, a researcher at the Xinhua Index Research Institute, interpreted the relevant indices. The data show that the total index of China's pet food industry development reached 124.05 points in 2024, with an average compound growth rate of 7.4% in the past four years, showing a parallel trend of scale expansion and quality leap. Among them, the industry environment and industry strength index have increased year by year, and the industry strength index is the key to driving the total index.

  In terms of the e-commerce market, the CAGR of the pet food e-commerce market size from 2021 to 2024 is 7.8%, with a retail value of nearly 28 billion yuan in 2024. The market is consolidating and integrating towards concentration and standardization, promoting high-quality development. Among the sub-categories, cat food accounts for 53.8% and is the dominant category, with the fastest growth rate, CAGR of 12.7% from 2021 to 2024, and a retail value of over 15 billion yuan in 2024; dog food accounts for 23.4%, with a CAGR of 0.5% in the past four years, and a year-on-year growth of 2.5% in 2024, showing signs of recovery.

  Nanhe, known as the "hometown of China's pet food," has an e-commerce market for pet food with an average compound growth rate of 13.1% from 2021 to 2024, and it is expected to reach 1 billion yuan in 2025. It is reported that the local area is promoting the transformation of the industry from scale expansion to brand deep cultivation by creating the "Nanhe Pet Industry" collective trademark and building a 50 billion yuan pet industry park.
